From a farming background, Professor Jim McAdam had a distinguished career as an agricultural scientist with the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute and Queen’s University Belfast. He was responsible for researching and monitoring Agri-Environment schemes and founded the agroforestry research programme in Northern Ireland.
He remains active in promoting the integration of trees on farms throughout Ireland—serving as a principal role on the GrowIN project team. Additionally, he is a director and a founder member of the Irish Agroforestry Forum, dedicating his expertise to expanding sustainable silvopastoral systems.
More recently, he has conducted critical research into nature-based water quality initiatives. He has also led key projects on peatland mapping and restoration, alongside analyzing the potential impacts of climate change on carbon stocks in the area surrounding Lough Neagh.
