Dairy Farmer • Soil Health Advocate • FFN Ambassador
Bruce is a dairy farmer based in Ballyfin, Co. Laois, where he runs a progressive grass-based system with a dairy herd of over 300 cows. An eighth-generation farmer, Bruce is deeply committed to balancing efficient food production with environmental care.
His work has increasingly focused on the role of dung beetles, recognising their importance for soil health, nutrient cycling and biodiversity. Through careful grazing management and a significant reduction in the use of animal wormers, he has helped restore thriving dung beetle populations on his farm.
Bruce is also leading a farmer-driven EIP focused on protecting these vital insects and is widely engaged in research, education and knowledge-sharing across Ireland and the UK. Passionate about integrating ecology into modern dairy systems, Bruce’s work shows how practical changes can deliver benefits for both farm performance and the wider environment.
As a Farming for Nature Ambassador, Bruce champions the integration of ecology into modern dairy farming, highlighting the role of soil biodiversity and insect protection in sustainable agriculture.
