Anthony runs a 200-acre beef enterprise in Co. Kildare, managing a herd of suckler cows and finishing cattle on long-established permanent pasture. Anthony has not used chemical fertilisers for over 20 years, allowing diverse grasses and wildflowers to flourish.
These species-rich meadows provide vital habitat for birds, with skylarks and meadow pipits regularly nesting on the farm. Anthony goes out of his way to protect birdlife on his land, even delaying mowing to ensure chicks can safely fledge.
His lifelong passion for wildlife has seen him restore ponds, plant hedgerows and woodlands, and carefully manage habitats to encourage a wide range of bird species, from songbirds to birds of prey. Through observation, recording and collaboration with conservation groups, Anthony continues to support biodiversity on his land.
As a Farming for Nature Ambassador, Anthony champions low-input farming and habitat restoration, proving that commercial enterprises can successfully foster rich biodiversity and thriving bird populations.
